The thing was, the house looked scary. Like the kind of house where someone treacherous, villainous, or evil lived. The paint was peeling, the yard was overgrown. The fence was rickety and skewed. The tree in the yard was on permanent Halloween duty.

No one would expect a kind little old lady to live there. And technically, one didn't. She didn't live there, because she was dead. The mailman was the first to suspect it, when she didn't come to the door and offer tea like always, when he was putting the mail in the slot. Three days that happened. Mr. Brown, feeling obligated as a US postal employee, mentioned it to the police when he dropped off mail at the station that afternoon.

Now, little old ladies --even kind ones-- die all the time. It's part of being old. But generally when they die they don't end up in a soggy heap, all soaked with blood. No, usually it's quiet like. In bed, mostly. Or in a chair. Sometimes they fall down the stairs and end up a bit broken, but this was different. Mrs Deveron had been murdered.
