Hi guys,

I was brought up on the Amiga classics - Beneath A Steel Sky etc Smiley Now I'm planning my first adventure, being a short, dark tale using Wintermute.

I've just done my first backgrounds in a few styles to see what I prefer. I'm almost settled on prerendered 3d for both backgrounds and characters, and am trying to solidify the style now.

I was hoping to get some feedback on the below, as I've been staring at them for far too long to be objective. It's the bedroom of my protagonist's apartment. She's a rock chick in her early 20s.

Basically, do they look good enough to use? In particular are they warm enough? I'll be using a top drop-down menu, hence I'm not letting the top of the background get too busy.

Many thanks for any comments/advice you can offer.

Good start! But overall a bit too clean (hey, she's a rock chick :-) ), and so more details wouldn't hurt.

Oh, and the carpet-material doesn't seem to receive shadows?

Other than that, it looks really nice.

And welcome to the Wintermute Army ;-)

I agree: Your screenshots are excellent!!!! albeit a bit clean.

What software do you use to draw your background?

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the comments Smiley

Agree on the cleanliness.

My process is sort of odd. For convenience I've been completely cheating and assembling rooms in 3D Home Architect Deluxe 6. This makes assembling scenes really easy and gives you a good shape library. It's render quality is surprisingly nice but just too "classic raytracer" clean so instead I'm exporting all the geometry and rendering in my own radiosity processor (come to think of it I really should update aRT's page on my site, the one that's up there's fairly primitive and several versions out of date).

The only post processing after the render is a gentle bloom to further warm the tones.

I think post render paintover might be my best bet to dirty things up. Or possibly loads of cunning decals in the 3d scene.

Any advice on getting rid of "cleanliness"? What sort of noise should I add? Sorry if this isn't the forum for this, but I know there's a few talented 3D folk hanging around here Wink

Very nice background. Color composition and contrast are both excellent Smiley

Sorry for the late reply.

No, I have nothig to do with Nihilis, we just had similar ideas when chosing our nicknames ;-)

But I agree, Dead City is really a cool game, and if it's that what made you chose Wintermute then you will be happy to hear that the engine has become even more cool since the days DC was released :-)

Your screenshot looks much better now!
