I've been toying with the idea of make your own adventure games for awhile, specially with the handheld options avaiable now.
One thing I find is your kinda force fed a little with the options
It would make a really interesting team effort if different people filled in the branches, there is a Wiki were people start the stories and other expand on them.
Personally I think I'd make it a text adventure clone, maybe expand it to a simple MI1 style gui, with pictures and text
I do have a story in mind but it might be a bit harsh.
Anyway I'm working on the system at the moment so we'll see how it goes Smiley

Sounds interesting Nige.  Let us know how it works out.  I might be willing to work on a branch or something if you do a group thing.

edit: The escapist just did a pick your own adventure, might want to look at it:

thanks for the link

Do you think taking it beyond
"You think a dragon did it"
"You think a troll did it"
Which ever option you take is set in stone and no going back is required?
Does adding options look at, take etc just make it a regular adventure game?
which would you rather play?

Have you played Deirdra Kiai's The Play? I think that kind of thing is more interesting than the usual style with questions at the bottom.

Something more like what you're thinking of is Tim Furnish's SuperStory. Here anyone can add branches.

Yes The Play is similar to what I had in mind,  TADS HTML was heading along those lines with links rather than needing to type

I'll check the other link now Smiley
Thanks

I think adding adventure type things would be fun, but puzzles would be nearly impossible unless everything you needed existed on that page.  Although it would be sort of interesting if you didn't do that, also.  Like you have to go down one path to get something you need to use to go down the other path.  So if you died or whatever, your inventory would stay with you.  Probably just drive the player nuts, though.  If the game, overall, were short enough, it might be possible.

Good you're having game making ideas NigeC!

There's opportunities to develop the make your own adventure kind of games.  If you see them as stories which the player is affecting the way they go then I feel options to look at, take are not appropriate.  And going back shouldn't be even possible.

"The Play" is certainly different, but for what it seems to be I'd have gone with the usual style.

I have mused in the past about a story which the player can choose the order they experience it in, but they still go through nearly each part of the story.

It'll be a lot easier to do if the player more focused on the branches they can take,  my story idea will.. I hope... work well.. famous last works lol
Anyway I'm working on the code to get the ball rolling, based around the first part of the story, I'm going to try both ideas tradition and something like the Play, its no hardship really
