I developed an engine for simple text/graphics adventures in a browser. It's written in HTML and JavaScript and works perfectly on iPhone and other mobile devices, too. And it's free!
The story is written in XML format with simple commands, there is no need to know programming.

That looks pretty nice.  It seems like for iPhone the text would need to be over the picture.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.  Browsers have a lot of promise as target platforms.

Putting the text over the picture (as overlay) might not be so simple. I guess each text should disappear after a click then, so a change in the engine would be necessary.
Anyway, a lot of visual things can be changed by modifying the CSS.

I uploaded a new version. It supports now integration in Facebook. The main feature is the possibility to store savegames on a PHP/MySQL server. Furthermore the "Share" dialog of Facebook is usable from the game script.

I'm planning a more visual/GUI based WebTale 2, by the way. Instead of lists you will have icons, and text will appear on top of fullscreen background pictures. Anyway, I cannot say yet, when I will finish it.
