I'm rather surprised no one has mentioned Grim Fandango... If ever there was a game that successfully combined 3D characters with pre-rendered 2D backgrounds, Grim was it!

Thats because Grim is old I guess... Although it wasnice for the time!

the best games today in the 2d/3d genre is Syberia and Still life (at least my opinion).
I think the Microids crew are the best in making beautiful design and good atmosphere, and the characters combines perfectly with the backdrop  Smiley

They are truly a source of inspiration for many amateur background artists.
