If the characters in a game don't seem to care about what's going on, why should the player?
That's something I agree with. (Not that I disagree with the rest, but this one needs repeating.)

Characters add interest and I tend to like the quirky, off beat ones a little more than someone a little more standard.  From what I played of the game up to where I got stuck, the dialog was one of the strong suits in my mind, especially the comments by the main character.  I think a character could appear bored in the game and it wouldn't necessarily translate to me because I would be looking for what makes him bored, but there should be a reason.  The worst, I think, is a guy that wants a hamburger or whatever.  I think games have to be a little more creative than that, but I like it when characters are part of the puzzles sometimes rather than just adding needed information.  One danger, especially for amateurs, is the tendency to make the characters long winded or say too many inane, supposedly funny things.  I want to play a game, not listen to a long winded rant about society.   A few jokes add interest, too many start to grate on my nerves a bit.
