Hey guys!

"DOTT2 - what is it?". Surely this was the first thought you got.
Everybody of you knows the cult adventuregame "Day of the Tentacle"
of the early 90's.

We are a group of fans, who are very fascinated of this game and
we are working on a sequel of this cool game.
But at the moment we need artists and animators, who draw the
characters and their animations. Also background artists are
very welcome!

So I ask you, if you would like to help us, in case you are interested in and have time for it.

You can find further information on our website:
www.dott2.org

There is also a trailer of DOTT 2, so you can see if this game
is something for you and you can draw our style. Also you will
find there some screenshots of the game to help you with your decision.

I would be very pleased if you answer to us!

Tentacle-regards!

Lucas Arts doesn't like that kind of thing.

I guess we'll see what LA's opinion is on remakes when Zak McKracken 2 is released in a few weeks
They may pass Zak McKracken by as it was never as popular as DOTT

You need permission to use someone else's copyrighted material.  Fan games are pretty harmless, but we need some kind of laws or no one can make money.  If the makers of Zak didn't get permission then they broke the law.

we are fans who want to create the prosecution of Day of the tenacle 2.

Perhaps they really do mean "prosecution"?

It was a little play on words that may be hard to understand because I don't think English is your first language. The word "prosecution" is normally used for criminal conviction, even though it can be used exactly the way you meant it to be used.  Dott is copyright protected by Lucas Arts and you need permission to make a game based on it, so they will prosecute you if you don't get permission from them and they don't normally give permission for that sort of thing and have used lawyers to shut down sites that try to write fan games based on their property.

Normally, we would say "We are fans and are creating a sequel to Dott." rather than "We are fans and we want to create the prosecution of Day of the Tentacle 2."  However you feel about making fan games, we need to all respect the law and that means getting permission from a company that has a copyright on characters, or a game.  You can always write a game in the spirit of Day of the Tentacle but with your own invented characters and title.

Since when did LucasArts shut down fan projects based on their adventure games?  Do you have any examples within the last 5 years?

I know they have done it.  I don't when the last time was.  The point is that they are a company that has openly made it plain they don't want their copyrighted material used in fan games.  Any time you use copyrighted material you are required by law to get permission from the person or company who created the material.  The only exception is when you use the material as a parody or you use small portions and quote the source.  Using characters in a sequel type thing doesn't apply to the exceptions and so is illegal without express written permission.  I think copyrights expire after 30 years.  I could be wrong about that, though.  So some of these works could have expiring copyright.  No one has done it, but don't think you can't be sued for publishing copyrighted material.

Actually James, Sierra has done the same thing. They did it to the site that is making Kings Quest IX. I don't know what the whole gist of the story is now but they're back to creating it again. I think they got permission from Sierra to do it. I know one of the artists working on it. I'm not interested in the whys and why nots I'm just interested in the when. But believe me these big companies are that petty.

I don't see the problem anyway, they're not making these games anymore so what's it to them if someone else does. It keeps the genre alive which  a lot of us still miss  those old games, and as long as no one is making money off of it, I don't see where there's a problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I got a spam that I accidentally opened that said that LucasArts had gone bankrupt, couldn't find out anything about it though. Oh well

Really?  Undecided Well, I'm aware that other companies might take action against fan projects, but as far as I know LucasArts couldn't care less about their old adventures.  Just take a look at fangames.co.uk.

The only way I could see them caring is if someone tried to make money out of it.  Speaking of which, have you heard of the game "Limbo of the Lost"?  Hahahaha  Cheesy

EDIT- Uhh, fangames seems to have not updated it's scripts so none of the links to games actually work.  I can't find it on the Mixnmojo FTP server either so I can't fix it.  Sad
